The VfL Bochum (Verein für Leibesübungen Bochum 1848) was formed in 1938 by the merger of three Bochum sports clubs, Turnverein Bochum 48, Germania 06 and TuS Bochum, with the origins of the Turnverein going back to 1848. At the end of October 2021, the Ruhrpott club had 17,726 members, making it one of the clubs with the most members in Germany. After the first men's team had been to the 2nd Bundesliga from 2010 to 2021, it was finally promoted to the 1st Bundesliga in 2021 after many years in the lower divisions. To the surprise of many, the 2021/2022 season saw VfL Bochum a solid Bundesliga season and finished 13th in the table with 42 points. The spectacular 4:2 home victory of VfL Bochum against FC Bayern Munich, as well as the Revierderby victory in Dortmund, will probably remain one of the highlights of the season.
