While the German U21 national team extended its lead at the top of the table in European Championship qualifying Group B with two wins against Latvia (4:0) and in Israel (1:0) at the end of March, the DFB Executive Committee decided that the upcoming home match will take place against Hungary in Osnabrück. Head coach Antonio Di Salvo's team won the first leg 5:1 in Szeged in October 2021.
Due to the current table situation - Germany is ahead of Israel (16) and Poland (15) with 21 points - and only two remaining qualifying matches, a draw is enough for the U 21s to qualify directly as group winners for the European Championship in Romania and Georgia (9 June to 2 July 2023). In addition, the other eight group winners, the best group runner-up and the two hosts will qualify directly. The other eight group runners-up will play off for the last four places in September.
