The Kandahar Race - Between heaven and hell!
The Kandahar run in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is one of the most demanding races in the Alpine Ski World Cup. In 1954, Garmisch-Partenkirchen began hosting the traditional Arlberg-Kandahar races. The Kandahar run is named in honor of Frederick Roberts, a British military leader who returned from Afghanistan as the “Earl of Kandahar”. Since 1970, FIS Ski World Cup races have been held on the Kandahar in Garmisch annually. In February 2011 Garmisch-Partenkirchen hosted the FIS Alpine Ski World Championships themed "Festival in the Snow". The event was a great success!
